2025 Film Makers Masterclasses with Mark Verkerk North Sea: Nature Untamed
Masterclass: Filmmaking for Ecological Awareness
Join wildlife filmmaker Mark Verkerk for a hands-on masterclass about using film to spark ecological awareness and change. Drawing on his latest film North Sea: Nature Untamed, Mark will share tips on storytelling, filming with purpose, and treating the natural world with respect.
Together we'll look at how local stories from the Hebrides can resonate far beyond the islands, explore different ways of shaping an ecological story, and talk openly about the challenges and responsibilities of filming wildlife. With plenty of time for questions and discussion, this session is all about inspiring filmmakers to see every shot as a chance to bring people closer to nature.
Mark Verkerk – wildlife filmmaker & storyteller
For more than four decades, Mark has been exploring the world through a camera lens. From the editing rooms of Sydney to the windswept shores of the North Sea, his work has revolved around one thing — a passion for documentary in all its forms.
Since 1990 Mark has been Creative Director at EMS FILMS in the Netherlands, where he has directed and supervised a range of award-winning documentaries for international broadcasters. Buddha’s Lost Children won multiple awards and was nominated as the Dutch entry for the Oscars. In recent years Mark has been creating a series of wildlife documentaries for cinema release that explore the extraordinary nature of the Netherlands. The New Wilderness became a cultural phenomenon, drawing over 700,000 people to the cinema. It was followed by Holland: The Living Delta, Wild Amsterdam, Planet Soil, and most recently North Sea: Nature Untamed.
“Every image has the power to shift perspective. My job is to challenge the illusion that humans are separate from nature — and reawaken in people a sense of awe and wonder for the vast web of life we are so intrinsically part of.”
