Samhradh 1979. Air ceumnachadh o chionn ghoirid, tha Ester, tidsear- sgoile 23-bliadhna, air gluasad gu baile Alta ann an ceann a tuath Nirribhidh gus tòiseachadh air a cùrsa-dreuchd. Coltach ri iomadh Sámi – muinntir dùthchasach Lochlann – tha Ester a’ gabhail nàimhdeas a cuid dualchais agus a’ falach a cinnidheachd gus
a bhith a’ co-mheasgachadh, ri fìor mì-mhisneachd a màthar. Ach ged a
tha i an-fhoiseil mun amalachas seo, tha a co-ogha Mihkkal a’ gabhail ri a freumhan gu fosgailte, agus is esan a bheir Ester gu campa fhaicinn ri taobh na h-aibhne far a bheil buidheann
a’ togail casaid an aghaidh plana an riaghaltais airson ionad dealan-uisge a thogail. Le bhith a’ tuigsinn gu mall gu
bheil a’ chòmhstri mu dheidhinn fada a bharrachd air draghan àrainneachdail - tha a dearbh-aithne agus a cultar fo dhùbhlan - tha Ester air a gluasad gu gnìomh, ga cur fhèin agus a luchd- gràidh ann an cunnart mòr...
Let the River Flow
Director: Ole Giæver, 124mins Norway 2023, Norwegian with English Subtitles. HIFF:15
Based on true events that inspired
a generation of young Norwegians, writer/director Ole Giæver’s elegant, multi award-winning historical drama follows a young woman who is unintentionally drawn into a protest against a dam that may flood Indigenous Sámi land.
Summer 1979. Recently graduated, 23-year-old schoolteacher Ester has moved to the northern Norwegian town of Alta to begin her career. Like many Sámi – the native people of Scandinavia – Ester is ashamed of her heritage and conceals her ethnicity in order to blend in, to the great consternation of her mother. Yet where she wears this integration uneasily, her cousin Mihkkal openly embraces his roots, and it’s he who takes Ester to see a camp by the river where a group is demonstrating against the government’s plan tobuild a hydroelectricity plant. Slowly understanding that the conflict is about far more than environmental concerns - her very identity and culture is under challenge – Ester is stirred to act, placing herself and her loved ones at considerable risk...
